Sam Noakes and Abdullah Mason are set to meet later this year with the WBO lightweight title up for grabs.
Last weekend, Keyshawn Davis, one of boxing’s brightest young stars, lost the aforementioned belt on the scales when he weighed in to face Edwin De Los Santos.
It now looks like Davis will resume his career at super-lightweight meaning that the WBO belt he once owned will be up for grabs between two of the highest ranked contenders.
Enter Noakes and Mason.
Last weekend, on the show that was supposed to be headlined by Davis, Mason stepped up and maintained his unbeaten record as he improved his ledger to 19-0 with a fifth-round stoppage of Jeremia Nakathila.
Mason has long been seen as one of the best prospects in boxing and he will now get a chance to become world champion after BoxingScene reported that the WBO will order a bout between him and Noakes.
The British contender is sitting comfortable at the top of the WBO’s rankings, and his excellent form will now see him receive a world title crack.
No details have been revealed of when or where this fight will take place, but a contest between two of boxing’s next generation could deliver a worthy world champion.
